Welcome to St. David's Website- We invite you to read more about us and then visit us and experience our Community!

Welcome from Reverend Vincent Scotto

“Eat, Pray, Love”. That is the motto of our parish and we are pleased that you found St. David’s website, whether you are a long-time parishioner, new to the Englewood, Florida area, a winter resident looking for a church home, or just visiting. We invite you to visit in person on a Sunday or any other time.

St. David’s is characterized by its commitment to Worship, Fellowship, and Witness. The Holy Eucharist brings us together as a worshipping community each Sunday. Prayer and educational programs strengthen us during the week. Having been fed spiritually and many other ways we answer the call of Christ Jesus to go into the world.

St. David’s is a designated Jubilee Center of the national Episcopal Church providing outreach and support to the many needy families and individuals of Southern Sarasota County. We are called to go out into the world as witnesses of the Good News of Jesus Christ. William Temple, former Archbishop of Canterbury, noted that “the church is the only organization that exists primarily for the benefit of those who are not its members.” As the Body of Christ, the Church, we are Jesus’ eyes and ears, and hands and feet. We are blessed so that we can be a blessing to others.

We care about one another and the world around us, and we would welcome becoming part of your life.

Report from March vestry meeting

April 03, 2017

Vestry Meeting Report: March 28, 2017

The vestry met Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 PM.
After prayers and readings, Deacon Micki and Father Scotto shared information about parishioners visited and we talked about those needing care, visits and/or contact. The Pastoral Care Team is currently visiting or monitoring twenty-five or so people. If you need a visit or know someone who does, contact Deacon Micki or call Karen at the church office.

Deacon Micki recommended we sponsor the Neuro Challenge Group/organization that provides support groups and training for those with Parkinson's Disease or their caregivers.
Resolved, that St. David's sponsor Neuro Challenge and let them use the Parish Hall once a month for support group meetings and guest speaker presentations beginning in June.
Financial Report:

In the first three months of the year, we have not needed a "draw" from the Unrestricted Endowment Fund and we have balanced our budget with Pledge and Plate income, facilities income and income from our highly successful Parish Dinners. Add to this that we have managed our expenses even though the Finance Committee made major cuts in many areas. The fact that we are not paying a full-time rector has had a significant effect as well. In the first two months of 2017 we had a Total Income (including transfers from savings for the paving project) of $ 50,773.01 against total Expenses of $ 48,926.54 for a surplus of $ 1,846.47. We began the fiscal year with a bank account balance of $11,798.18 and started March with a balance of $13,644.58 - and no need to take money from the Unrestricted Endowment Fund.
Capital Improvements: We completed Phase 1 of the driveway paving project ($12,800) using funds contributed to the Capital Campaign. Phase 2, the Jubilee Center lot, is still in the planning stages, but we hope to complete the work before rainy season. We have found that the Water Department owns a strip of land that is in our driveway and we are working with them to solve this problem.
Endowment Funds: The Unrestricted Endowment Fund & the Scholarship Fund grew during January and February as we added interest and dividends and the total value of the portfolio grew as a result of the strong stock market. This further meets the vestry goal to preserve endowment for the future.
Air Conditioner Replacement: We must replace the air conditioning unit in the church and two small units in the parish hall at a total cost of $39,996 (the work begins next week to avoid the mold problems we faced last summer). The vestry voted last week at an emergency meeting to borrow the $40,000 and repay over ten or fifteen years. We reviewed loan offerings from the National Church and the Diocese and decided to go with the Diocese since they gave us a 3% rather than 5.75% interest rate and reduced the period to ten years - this decision will save St. David's $14,000 over the course of the loan. Since our endowment fund has generated a minimum of 7% interest over the last three years, we should continue to see a net gain by using the loan - again preserving endowment funds. We did temporarily restrict $40,000 of the endowment as a loan payback safety net for future vestries. We can use the income, but not the principal of this part of the fund.
Hymnals: Since we have a balance in our Hymnals account we are looking to purchase more of the Renew songbooks - they are out of print, but we feel confident we can find some used books to fill all the pews.
Search: Senior Warden Maggie Gentile informed us that Canon Durning will be here this Sunday to meet with the vestry and update us on candidate applications. So pray for us and St. David's.
